About the event

On International Women’s Day, Downsview Aerospace Innovation & Research (DAIR) in partnership with Women in Aerospace (WIA) Canada and De Havilland Canada (DHC) were proud to host their event “The Cost of Not Paving the Runway” to highlight the invaluable impact women have on our industry. We recognized the outstanding achievements of creative, pioneering women worldwide, acknowledged how far we have come – and the opportunities for further growth in advocating for greater gender equality.

The event began with a wonderful presentation from our keynote speaker on why it is important to have diversity within the aerospace industry and the invaluable impact that women provide. This was followed by a discussion amongst the three panelists and our moderator, herself a woman in aerospace. Many people appreciated the open and honest answers to a variety of questions, leading many to reflect on their own experiences and made for a very lively networking session afterwards, both online and in-person.

The event featured:

Keynote Speaker – Dr. Wendy Cukier, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and Founder of the Diversity Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University

Panelists – Sandra Howell, Vice President Corporate Operations at De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, Piyush Gandhi, Vice President, Operations and Business Development at Presage Group Inc. and Lieutenant-Colonel Melissa Reyes, MSc – Section Head – Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Space Systems, Director General Air and Space Force Development / Canadian Armed Forces
